short trips around the karoo
DTours
are a small family run business that take trips into the
magnificent Karoo. Johnnie Morgan can tailor-make an itinerary to suit
your needs. This is just a rough guide to a generic tour to the area.
Highlights of this tour include:
The Valley of Desolation - Graaff - Reinet
Helen Martin's Owl house in Nieu Bethesda
Ganora Farm for fossil walks, san paintings
Mountain Zebra Park ( most scenic park in SA)
 |
Day
1 : We
head into the great Karoo – a region famous for its dinosaur fossils and
hauntingly beautiful landscapes. En route we stop at a Karoo
farm for refreshments. Our
hostess has an interesting aloe collection (the plant Aloe Vera cream is made
of). Our destination is the
charming town of Graaff-Reinet, which played a major role in the stormy frontier
history of South Africa. This Karoo
town is famous for its period architecture - a heritage evident in the more than
200 national monuments. We explore the town and also visit an incredible cactus
garden. With sundowners, we watch
the sun set over the breathtaking Valley of Desolation, a geological phenomenon
overlooking the town. We overnight
in this charming town and enjoy a hearty Karoo dinner. (included)

2 : Today
we journey to the tiny hamlet of Nieu-Bethesda, where we visit the now famous
“Owl House”. This was the home of the late Helen Martins, an eccentric
artist, who expressed her quest for light and colour in elaborate patterns of
crushed glass and filled her little world with weird and wonderful creations.
Travelling further afield to Ganora, we enjoy a tour of a wool shed and do a
guided fossil walk. After lunch at Ganora (included), we travel to the Mountain
Zebra National Park near Cradock, another charming Karoo town steeped in
history. Through the creation of this national park, the rare mountain zebra was
saved from extinction.
|

We overnight in Cradock at the
Tuishuise, with restored and individually decorated houses from
a bygone era. Dinner is included.

Day
3 : Before leaving Cradock and
heading back to Port Elizabeth to arrive about midday, we visit the home of
Olive Schreiner, a world-renowned writer and early campaigner for women’s
rights.
